Limiting PM's to New Members

As you guys know, I'm on this forum most every day.
I don't see what good limiting PM abilities is.
It seems only to be hampering sales to some of our top sellers.
Time after time, i'm seeing posts from new members saying they can't reply to PM's from sellers - or anyone else.
Why do we have that policy?

I think it would be more effective to somehow limit the ability for a new member (with a low post count- say under 25) to post a "new" thread in the For Sale sub-forum. In other words, under 25 posts, you don't have ability to sell stuff here.
But they should still be able to start threads in the Wanted sub-forum.

Hope this makes sense, I think it's a better idea than our current policy.

JD,
I've sent a PM to the admin with your question for consideration.

Has anyone noticed that almost 100 percent of the spam originates in the new member introductions? Can't we attack the problem somehow through this? Maybe a couple day limit before a new member can post an introduction? I don't know anything about this spam stuff, just throwing out an idea.

Well, I don't mind addressing the spam, but for clarity of this thread, I'd like to stay focused on a new members ability to reply to PM's sent by current members and sellers.
This will help everybody. Win Win.

edit: thanks SubSailor (Where's my manners )

We've had a lot of discussion here regarding minimum post counts. We instituted that for a while and I ended up spending most of my time removing posts, then explaining why I did it and pissing off 80% of those who did it. The reason it came up then was to address members getting screwed on a deal. As a percentage, that doesn't happen too often around here. We all know there is a ZERO tolerance for it, and it's one of the quickest ways to get the boot, plus the feedback feature helps. I think that a reset on allowing PM's is something we can definitely look at, but I don't think a minimum post count will address your original concern....

its only 25 posts. for the privilege to sell your goods, ask for goods or start a thread.

seems like a pretty fair toll to me

1000rr is 100 posts and i think r1, r6 are 90 days and a minimum post.

RC forums has always been pretty lax compared to the other places and from my experience has always been great.

I say keep it as it is....between the spammers and fly by night people wanting to dump off their wares without actively participating, we get enough traffic.

Besides, there will be that one time where someone gets burned by a newby and fit will hit the shan.

Again, unless I missed something...the concern here was the inability for new members to contact a seller due to low post count? Removing the post count requirement would solve that.

That is what I gathered, the issue is that new members are not able to PM for items they see listed for sale.

Being able to PM just allows someone the privacy to communicate one on one, doesn't guarantee that person's character...so having a minimum post count to PM doesn't really make any sense.

I agree that all members should have PM privileges right away, as it wouldn't detract from the forum or cause any issues...unless I'm missing something from a security/spam point of view?
