madbuyer Just a can loosen the sprocket nuts while the chain is still connected for better leverage.

sircrisp Ok so now I am trying to remove the front sprocket but it keeps spinning with the nut, even in gear. How do I keep this from happening?

edit: Nevermind I threw the new chain on halfway and put a pipe between the tire and swingarm and got it loose.

SubSailor The bearings should rotate smoothly with no roughness and with very little effort.
They should not offer large resistance to rotation or only in certain areas.

Also there should be no play (slop) in the inner race when moved axially or radially.
Plus, there shouldn't be grease leaking past the seals either, which could allow debris into the bearing races.
If these conditions exist, then the bearings and seals are worn and should be replaced.
They are not that expensive compared to the alternative.

I've seen the results of this when bearings seized in their races and started rotating on the axle shaft. The result of this was friction welding of the bearing onto the axle.

The opposite was the destruction of the bearing cage, allowing the balls to escape.
Then the wheel was flopping about and could have been a deadly situation if it was at a decent clip.

cacc yeah I had the same problem with my sprocket. I slipped a 2 foot length of pipe over my ratchet handle to get enough torque to get the bolts loose.

got them lose with my mighty mits and a bigger ratchet. that's as clean as I'm making it lol.
now if only my torque wrench would come so i could put it back on!

noifcustoms If you have the rear wheel on the bike, hold it at the top and bottom from the side and wiggle it. You should start shaking the bike. If you feel play, replace the bearings. Also try this holding at 3 &9 o'clock and shake. As for the sprocket bolts I am not sure. I am about to attempt this as well

sircrisp Also I am having a hard time removing these sprocket nuts. I tried to put it in my vice but it keeps slipping out. Anyone know a easier technique to getting them off?

I have them soaking in PB blaster atm. Thinking about letting it soak for awhile, putting it back in the vice, and trying again with my impact gun.

rear wheel bearing

Hey guys. I finally got my stuff in the mail to replace my chain. I just took the rear tire off and noticed the sprocket had a little play in it. This disturbed me because in my other thread you told me to check the carrier bearing for the front sprocket and it shouldn't have any.

Well then I realized the rear sprocket had play because it is supposed to come off

But now how do I check the rear wheel bearing to see if it's good?
