I have an 2001 SP1 which is the one and only year that is fitted with a swing arm that does not have accommodations to mount spools for a rear stand. I find this to be a real hassle. The standard rear stands equipped with rubber pads are not nearly as stable as a rear stand outfitted for spools. As a work around, Driven Racing, and others, offer Axle Block Sliders or complete Chain Adjusters that are equipped with spools which replace the stock chain adjuster blocks.

Unfortunately, they do not offer a set to fit an RC 51. Does anyone know of a manufacture that does?

I would rather not go through the work of swapping out the swing arm for one from a 2000, which appears to be the identical swing arm except that it has accommodations for spools. Does any one know why Honda made this change for the 2001 model year? Did the swing arms on the 2000 models experience some form of failure related to the spools?

The blocks you posted are useless as you can't remove the rear wheel using them. They're only useful for cleaning the chain.


I don't know why Honda didn't use spools in 01, but I have never heard of failures.

I agree, they are limited. But for major service I have both an Eazy Rizer lift and a Kendon lift.

As you point out, it's the more common cleaning and lubricating of the chain that occurs every 500 to 600 miles that is the issue. In addition, I store each of my bikes on front and rear stands when they are not in use to prevent the tires from developing flat spots. For these two activities the spool equipped axle blocks would prove more effective than the rubber padded rear stand does currently.

You may be right, APC.

The swingarm spools that I linked to in my initial post are designated for a 2005-2017 CBR 600 or a CBR 1000RR. When I look up the OEM part numbers for an 2001 RC 51, an 2005 CBR 1000RR and an 2008 CBR 1000RR, I find the following.


2001 RC 51:
Left: 42305-MCF-000
Right: 42306-MCF-000

2005 CBR 1000RR:
Left: 42305-MEL-000
Right: 42306-MEL-000

2008 CBR 1000RR:
Left: 42305-MFL-000
Right: 42306-MFL-000​

As you can see, the part numbers are almost identical, except for the MCF, MEL and MFL designations. I know that Honda uses variations in their part numbers for identical parts to track which parts are sold for a particular model and/or year. Does any one know what the designations MCF, MEL and MFL might stand for?
