Hello all,

I recently purchased my first RC51. A 2004 that, being a big Hayden fan was the year I have always hoped to have. Being a Ducati owner and WSBK fan I have always wanted an RC51 but for one reason or another never put one in the stable. I came across a deal that I could not pass on and am now the owner of a bike in need of a lot of love. She had been sitting in a barn with around thirty other bikes for the past ten years with only a little over 5000 miles on the clock. I don't know much of her past but she does have a clear title, a running engine and what seems to be a straight frame.

It is my hope that fellow forum members with more educated eyes for this bike can help me come up with a parts list to get her back on the road and working towards her former glory. My plan is to put her back on the street as I already have two dedicated track bikes. I am away for the next two months but would like to start rounding up parts as soon as I can so that I can jump right into her once I am state side again.

"Former glory"will cost a pretty penny if you want all OEM panels.
Alternatively -and if you can live with some imperfection- there are Chines body panel kits.

Or replica decal sets...

I actually have a full set of factory panels of an '05 for the bike already that will just need to be painted in '04 scheme. I knew I would have one at some point so I have a small collections of parts I have picked up over the years. That being said does anyone have a good source for a complete decal set for the '04? And maybe the paint codes? Like to have all of that ready to take to my painter when I get home. One big elephant though is that I do need a fuel tank so if anyone out there has a spare please let me know! :grin2:

Yes, I totally agree with the 'boob' comment. Truly an unforgivable sin! I think the brushed frame and swingarm on these bikes is very beautiful! Thankfully it is just a very poorly done rattle can job and it was flaking off with me just running my hand over it. Is acetone going to be the best for getting this off the frame and swing arm? I don't know what is best and I don't want to discolor the aluminium frame in anyway. Unfortunately there is over spray on everything too so there is going to be a lot of disassembly just to clean everything up.

Trying to get some more pictures up... I suppose I should start a 'Parts needed' thread in the classified / marketplace. Anything that anyone can see that I need please let me know, or if there are things that should be improved or upgraded now is the time to do it!

The Tail

Here are a few shots of the tail. Looks like there is an inner and outer fender and I'm going to need both. I would like to find both stock pieces, a full inner and the outer with the stock square tail lights. If anyone one has pictures of these handy I'd love to know what everything is supposed to look like back here.

When I polished my frame on the VFR back in 1991 (when it was popular) I tried everything to remove the anodize. The only thing that worked was EZ-Off oven cleaner, so stay away from that for sure. I would strip the bike down to the frame, or frame and engine. Then try things from least caustic to most aggressive.

Water Blast
Simple Green
Kerosene
Brake Cleaner/Carb Cleaner (carb cleaners tend to be a bit more oily)
Lacquer Thinner
Jasco Paint Remover


Try a spot inside the frame or swingarm to test first, and always rinse with soap and water afterward - do not let anything sit on the surface overnight.....
(do not use dish soap on painted surfaces as it will strip the wax off, and oils from the paint)

I'm guessing those 05 panels are damaged because painted fairings are never as good as OEM. And aren't worth near as much $$ either.

I'd guess you are just trying to find some okay used parts to make it reasonably road worthy again. Trying to restore it to new clean OEM condition would be an exercise in spending thousands more than buying a clean example.

It looks like a big project and a lot of work. I look forward to seeing it.

Thanks for all the guessing but to your disappointment the '05 panels are in original condition that came off a bike with about 3000 miles on them in '07 when a friend I race with bought and converted the bike to a dedicated track bike. He gave them to me a few years ago long after the bike was gone. They are fine as is but not correct to the '04.

I guess prices are much lower in Canada. If you can find me an '04 with a clean title and less than 15,000 miles for less than $5000 than I'll be on a plane to pick her up as soon as soon as I'm back in North America. I have almost nothing into the bike so as long as I can find parts I'm not worried about the cost.

But the question is out there, if anyone has a clean Hayden they are tired of...

Am I barking up the wrong tree on this forum?

The point is clean original side panels are expensive and worth good money. And if painting panels one should instead get a set of lightly scratched or damaged ones for that. Sell the clean panels for good money, buy slightly damaged panels cheap and use that extra money to paint them. It's a waste of money (literally throwing money away) to paint clean OEM panels. Painted panels are never as good as OEM and never worth as much either.

I have been restoring an 04 to new clean OEM condition for a number of years and have thousands of dollars into it above the price of the bike. And my 04 was 10X better than this bike in pictures when I bought it. That's why I posted asking about how pristine you want the bike. I don't play fast and loose with language like new clean OEM condition. I don't see that bike getting fixed to pristine original for anywhere near $5k. Pristine original RC51's sell for $8-10k US easily. Pristine clean original is big $$.

A reasonable fix to average used RC51 condition can potentially be done with $5k.

News flash, we're trying to understand what you want out of this rebuild so that we can potentially help. I guess that's bad.

There was a thread here a couple of days ago pointing out a clean '04 with a locked up motor for $1000 in Louisiana Craigslist. Needless to say , it was gone the next day. If I were closer I'd have grabbed that up for spares in a heartbeat. :crying:

That was a crazy good deal if the bike was clean. It looked clean in the pictures. I was thinking about how I could make it work to get down there myself :).

Should be heading back in early October, all these crazy typhoons are not helping. KIX underwater was interesting... I need to come up with a parts / wish list. Looking forward to getting started on her.
