Need people's thoughts on oil filters and oil to use for my bike cause recently bought it about a month and half ago and the engine hasn't been ridden but 500 miles on it but sit for over a year so i want to freshen her up and was curious of what guys have been using and recommend on this. I was leanin towards the k&n oil filter and using a full synthetic oil. But want to get the best bang for ur buck. Since i have to buy 5qts, since my bike holds 4.1qts. Much help would be appreciated. By the way its an 2003 sp2.

Thanks

The article is a lil confusing, but i'll take ur word for it. That castrol full synthetic motorcycle oil won't harm it? I was always told its ok to use synthetic oil in cars and trucks but generally not a good idea in bikes. Have u heard of this? If so why is that? But what ur saying is they are ok on these bikes?

You want to stay away from oils with molybdenum, that will cause issues with the clutch. I have used this oil for a long while now. My oil changes vary between 1,200 to 2,000 miles, depends on how hard I run her. You will tell when it's time to change oil, the clutch usually tells me on feel.

Look closely at the picture of the oil container, that is Castrol full synthetic MOTORCYCLE Oil. They leave out the friction reducing additive that damages the clutch plates on motorcycles. If you get full synthetic car oil, it can cause problems with your clutch plates.

Because of the convienence, I go to AutoZone, buy Mobil-1 4T 10w40 full synthetic, and a Mobil-1 filter. Filter usually cost about $15 and the oil is usually about $10-$11/qt.
I also go to the dealer (when I plan for it, that is) and buy an OEM filter and Honda HP4S 10w30. It runs around $14/qt.
My bike has the best and smoothest shifts, on the HP4S.
I get about 3000 to 4000 miles from my oil. I can tell when it's time to change by the feel of shifting and the color of the oil.

So, what you're saying is.. I have a chance. :D Lol
Sorry couldn't help myself after reading this thread. Get a m1-108 and call it a day. If you're gonna ask which gloves to use when u change the oil, use the black ones because they are tougher.
Jk OVerthrown. Congrats in getting an 03. U grabbed the fastest and bestest looking Year RC

Thanx macDANalay. Really love her. After it took me this long to get her. Not usually a Honda guy, but when she came out, I was in love. I ride her just about everyday like Nicky Hayden, leaning in to corners and whatnot. Thanks, you guys for all your help, I think I am going to go with the mobile one filter and Castrol rs 4 stroke oil.

Sounds good. Ride safe and have fun. Btw, a lot of us have been using the Mobil1 4t 10w40 motorcycle oil for years with 0 problems on our bikes. Also, if you have a cyclegear near u, they have a $12 (I think it's $12, lol) rebate when u buy 5qts and $15 (I think it's $15, lol) rebate if you buy a mobil1 filter with the oil.
Side note: working graveyards is really starting to play tricks on me. Haha

What part # is the mobil 1 oil filter? Cause they have 2 different ones. My bike is an SP2

I've used the Mobil 1 M1-108 and M1-110 (slightly longer) oil filters on my bikes...

FWIW - You can usually find Mobil 1's motorcycle specific oil, the 4T 10w-40 flavor, for around $9 per quart at the local Walmart.

I'll order the oil filters (for my cars and bikes) in bulk at Advance Auto Part's website when they run those specials - they generally send you coupons or discount codes via e-mail and you can save a pretty good amount of coin if you order several filters/items at once. Just food for thought.

:)
