Hi everyone, brand new to the rc51 forum. Had to make a account so I could discuss my problem. I just recently got a 2001 rc51. I've had it for a few days now with no problems what so ever. As I was riding to work I look down and notice my cluster is going haywire. It looked like it kept turning on and off, the rpm kept going back and forth and everything was going crazy. After a few minutes it went back to normal for maybe 5 minutes and went back to doing the same thing. Got back home and parked it. Noticed that when it idles the gauges flicker really badly and the headlights and taillights flicker with it. Also noticed that when this happened I lost my horn and turn signals. I've checked the battery and charging system so I know I'm good there. I think it's a short somewhere but have no idea what to look for and where to check. Any help at all would be great. Perfect weather right now and I can't ride it like this:/

Did you check the tightness of the battery terminal connections. Twins shake it loose if played with especially... 95% of this issue. Don't be shy if so and report back.

I disconnected the battery and had autozone test it, the battery tested good and I hooked it back up, I noticed the positive terminal was a little bent so I might try bending that back tomorrow, it's 1:17am here and my girlfriend would kill me if I started my rc up right now. I really hope its that but I know for a fact it has a tight connection.

add a little electrical grease to the connection points, and follow all wires that point to your issue just to secure any loose ends...

There's some wiring near the left side radiator that is worth checking. I had mine rub through and damage a bunch of the wiring and although my symptoms were not the same, i know the horn and turn signals go through that harness. Again, worth a peek.

Okay so I completely tore into this bike, found 3 pinched wires and one exposed wire. Fixed all of this and got my turn signals and horn back but the cluster was still going haywire. Upon further inspection I found that the postive cable running from the battery was lose. It wasn't the battery cable but a electrical terminal by the battery near the solenoid. Has a 30 plug right next to it. The plastic clip had broken off and the vibrations made it come loose. Have a new clip coming in this friday. Thanks for all the help guys and all the info. So glad to have it running like it should:)

Okay guys, so I have a new problem and im getting real sick of this bike! I just want to ride and I get some stupid problem left and right. Tonight I rode to walmart which is less than a mile away. When I went to start the bike it blew the ignition fuse, then within seconds it blew headlights, after that it blew turn signals and horn, and when I was loading it it blew gauge. What the heck just happened? I just blew almost every fuse in less than 3 minutes. Please help!
