when i bought my 04 a couple years ago it came with hid headlights already installed, it looks like the previous owner hacked the harness to splice the new system. i had to replace the ballasts and bulbs last year, and now, the low beam went out again today, i tried a different bulb and checked all the connections, it looks like i will have to replace everything again. my question is, is this common? i thought hid's were supposed to last longer? i'd like to go back to stock but the weather is great now and that will take some time trying to figure out the damage and locating oem parts. any advice would help

I had no problems with hids going out but went back to stock. You may just need some bulbs. Mine and im assuming most hid ballast use the oem sockets to connect.

Throw that HID shit in the trash. Our bikes take H7 bulbs, but OEM actually uses the H4 socket (same as the H7, but the H7 only uses two wires to each bulb since they are single filament).

You have a few choices:

1) You can buy H4/H7 sockets, and some wire and terminals and wire it up yourself. http://www.easternbeaver.com/Main/Elec__Products/Connectors/Headlight_Connectors/headlight_connectors.html

2) You can buy prewired H4/H7 sockets and wire them into the existing wires. http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=h7 socket

3) You can buy an entire new front harness and put it in. http://www.ebay.com/itm/q-headlight-harness-04-honda-rc51-/290685083276?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item43ae2e5e8c&vxp=mtr

#3 is the best choice, but also the biggest pain in the ass. If you don't know how to solder, and aren't comfortable doing wiring work, that is your best bet. You also have to make sure you are getting a harness that hasn't been hacked up like yours, and chances are that it has to be SP1/SP2 specific.
