I have a 2001 with 12800 miles on her, I just replaced the battery and had a tuneup in February. The mechanic idled the bike down to 1000 rmp, I idled the bike back to 1300 rpm I went to the gas station and the bike rpm dropped to 800 and the bike choked off. The bike was low on fuel since I only had a half of gallon in it after the fuel tank swap last week. The bike did run out of gas before pulling out of the driveway. Went to the gas station a put a gallon in it and later topped off the tank. The bike has never started up on the first try and almost always have to twisted the throttle to crank. What could this be

Is there a strong smell of gasoline from the exhaust, or maybe even enough to seep through the pipe joint at the mid-pipe?
Have you also checked that no lines to the tank are pinched? You did mention a recent tank swap.

No strong odor of gas, the lines seem to be fine it drove good from the shop home. It happened after it ran out of gas and I adjust the idle speed. I got out and rode the bike one more time tonight and it requires you twisted the throttle to crank, after that it idles fine until the temp warms up to about 180 and then when coming to a stop at a light its idles below 1000rpm. I have to hold the throttle to keep it running but after that is runs fine.

After reading some past replies it sounds like the fuel pressure regulator from what i understand. How hard is it to change one out, I don't trust my mechanic anymore after he kept my bike for 2 months, lying about the work he was doing to it, so he is gone.

mine is doing somthing very similar. Come up to a light and it srarts idling really low and you revit up and it sounds like its missing or somthing. It finally stopped after i rode for about 20 min. When i hit a pothole it cuts out also for a second. Not always, only when its doing the idle problem. My bike is like 2 bikes in 1. I never know which im getting day to day. Love hate relationship starting here. Subsailor, i hope you can diagnose this problem considering your our resident tech guy! Is the regulater exspensive? Funny thing is that i had my tank off to seal it up and thats when the problem started. I have since had the tank off 4 times trying to diagnose a pinched line or somthing, maybe a frayed wire but nothing

Well there is a vacuum hose going to the fuel pressure regulator.
If that's pinched or blocked, the it will affect the fuel pressure.
If the system isn't throwing any FI codes, then it should be mechanical rather than electrical or electronic in nature.
The fuel pressure regulator isn't hard to change, it's just difficult since you have to remove the airbox to get to it.
The regulator itself is around $40-50.
Could possibly be the fuel filter inside the tank.

OK, I will check the following tomorrow. I know I haven't change the fuel filter since I got it and just got a new body kit so something could be in a pinch

Does your bike have a power commander installed?
It may be a good idea to try disconnecting the power commander and see how it runs without it.
Some instances with a flaky power commander seem similar.

it can run without it? seems kinda weird, just unplug it and not plug anything back into it and it will run?

Still haven't had a chance to break mine down to see whats' the problem is with the idling. I did crank it you yesterday and it idle fine for several minutes. I decide to ride it to work ( 20 miles) to see what it would run like. It idled fine on the way to work, later on the ride back home it started idling rough after a refuel and started idling below 1000. I order a fuel pressure regulator before receiving all the replies and I also have a fuel filter on the way, should be here Thursday. I figure that since I have a fuel pressure regulator and a fuel filter should I replace both of them or just the fuel filter which I believe it maybe.

Got a chance to work on the bike this past weekend, I replaced the fuel pressure regulator and fuel filter since I had both, I also replaced some hoses that had dry rotted. Once the job was completed the bike cranked right up on the first try. The bike idled great as I took it on a test ride. Everything seems to be working fine. Also did a PAIR mod, so this weekend turned out pretty good.
