Hey there all. So this is my build for my RC51. This bike took me about 2 years to build, and I built it simultaneously with a 2003 GSXR-1000, as you’ll see in the pics. The bike has many custom carbon fiber parts and a couple other custom parts. Full Ohlins suspension with RK Excel wheels, brembo RCS19 brake MC and RCS 16 clutch MC with Oberon Slave cylinder. Electropolished Jardine 2-into-1 exhaust with Yoshimura R77d carbon canister. Turn 1 carbon snorkel and air box, adjustable rear sets, and lots more that I’m sure I’ve forgotten. I fell in love with this bike the first time I rode it, and had to build one just for me. Lemme know what you think...

What was the extent of your build? Did you purchase a complete bike, and change to your taste? Re-Animate a basket case? One piece at a time? I'm interested in the process. Might try it myself. Where did you get the rear foam butt pad? I ordered one off Ebay, but yours looks a bit larger than the one I have coming. I'm not a fan of the 2 into 1 exhaust on the RC personally, but your bike looks real nice! Gotta give a thumbs up to anyone that goes after a project like this.

Nice work man. The pics are way to small...better if you host them somewhere else and share a link....i am in a similar build been slacking for a year :(....2018

NICE bike !!!! Do you live in Massachusetts ??? I saw in the bike of month post you said you had some carbon parts made in Mass. Myself and a few other guys on here are from Massachusetts.

I’m actually living in Winston Salem, NC right now, but originally from Southwest Michigan. Haven’t made it up to Mass before. Sorry about the size of the pics. Is there a better place to post or host pics on the forum?

So this is from the 2018 BOTM post I made a few days ago. But not sure how to separate this chat from the BOTM thread? Anyway, I’m kinda new to forms, so please be nice when I post in the wrong place or don’t sound like I know what I’m doing... because I probably don’t when it comes to this forum. Here’s the post about what I did during my RC51 build.

So the bike started out as a pretty nice bike to begin with. It had ladybird slip ons, the turn 1 carbon snorkel and air box, but the rest of the bike was pretty much OEM and unmolested. It also came with a beat up 04 Hayden parts bike that was beat with a baseball bat by someone’s girlfriend... and that’s all I asked about it. So for $4300, I bought the bike and a bunch of spares.

So, basically I hung the bike from my garage ceiling by straps, tore it down, inspected everything, and then replaced any bearings, seals, washers and bolts that needed it. Bought a set of RK Excel wheels, Dan kyle did my suspension, Brembo RCS brake and clutch masters, core brake/clutch lines, wired under tail and front end the right way with OEM connectors, had a plating company electropolish a Jardine 2-into-1 exhaust with carbon Yoshi R77d, worked with a carbon fiber guy in Massachusetts who made me some one off carbon parts, including tank guard, exhaust hanger, rear hugger/chain guard, chain and sprockets, full service of fluids and greasing everything with new grease, and then re-assembling everything and tweeking the control area and making sure nothing is pulling, chaffing, or bending. There’s a ton of stuff I did to help reduce weight as well, like Shorai battery, titanium bolts, deleted rear pegs and rear fender, etc. then touched up any paint marks on the frame, swingarm and fairings, painted the radiators black. There’s much more to it, but you get the idea.

What I didn’t do was tear the engine down or do any engine or tuning work. It ran great, so I didn’t mess with it. I also didn’t fabricate any of these parts on my own. Basically I just had an idea of what I wanted, and tried to make it so. The only thing I would’ve changed is that I would change the color of the wheels to silver or gold. The army green doesn’t do it for me, but they don’t come in any other color. Although the wheels are top notch in fit and finish. And let me tell ya, this thing Was a beast in the twisty roads of North Carolina before I made all the changes. Can’t wait to run the tail of the dragon on it this year!!

There’s a pic of what the bike looked like when I bought it attached, as well as some more random build pics. This is the 4th bike I’ve done up like this, and I’ve got a pair of L-model ZX-7’s I’m building right now. They will be something special I assure you. Thanks for the interest and I’m happy to share any resources I have. I also have a ton of parts I’d you need something.

I rode the Tail of the Dragon a couple of times in 2012 on a borrowed VFR800 (VFRD ralley). Had to "time"my start carefully to avoid the Beetle/Mini/HD Club of America groups. the odd HD is easily taken care off; they'd usually move over... :)

One thing I donot read in your list is "electrical"; I'd suggest you whip out the multimeter and do "the drill" on altenator AC/Ohm, voltage regulator&battery DC, checking the wiring and connectors.

Good call on the electrical. I didn’t really think to do all of that while I had it apart. I appreciate the suggestion and welcome any others you may have. I’ve only owned my RC51 for a couple years, so I’m still learning the bike. It won my heart the first time I rode it though.

If you’re interested in riding the Tail again this year, feel free to hit me up. I’d love to meet some forum members and ride those rides. I’m about 3.5 hours away. Have a good one.

Thanks for the offer, but there's the Atlantic to cross and heck, some of the American ladies/female colleagues I acquainted in the past will now shout "me too" to Homeland/border security... :)
