Okay, so I'm new to the RC-51 scene as I have recently purchased a 2001 RC-51. I'll tell you what, I will never want another bike again. I absolutely love this bike!

I am having a very upsetting problem though. Where I live, you are required to have working turn signals to pass state inspection. The RC-51 came with an aftermarket under tail which looks amazing.

Problem:

1. None of the turn signals work. No running lights etc.
2. The turn signal indicator in the dash is not blinking amber like it should.
3. I can't figure out what the problem is because everything is wired the way it should be, no burnt out bulbs, etc.

Actions taken so far:
I unplugged all of the turn signals and clicked on the turn signals, left, right, and off.
I got a faint response from the indicator on the dash, and I'm still hearing the relays kicking over. (A faint flicker of the indicator lighting up for a mere second then quitting.

UPDATES:
-I am now getting a steady indicator light on the gauge cluster a long with a buzzing noise coming from the relay.
-I've tried wiring my headlight bulb up to it each turn signal with no luck, just the same response from the bike when I hit the turn signal, no indicator light, no turn signal.
-I have LED rear turn signals, and bulbs for the front.

Does anyone have any suggestions of what the problem might be or what I could try?

I want to get out on the road as soon as possible but this is the only thing holding me back.

To start I'd...
Check the voltage at the lights
Bench test the relays
Make sure the switch is making good contact.

I'm sure someone will be a long shortly with the link to the PDF service manual.

Double check all the grounds and look for corrosion and all connectors and apply a little dielectric grease to them

Green/Yellow = Brake Light
Green = Ground
Black/Brown = Tail Light

License Plate Light:

Haha, alright.

Well here's what I found so far. What the previous owner had going on in the tail section was a birdnest so I tidied everything up a little bit. The blinkers for the tail light are LED. The front blinkers are the tiny little orange bulbs inside of a housing case. I unplugged ALL of the turn signals and flicked the turn signal on and I got the indicator light working (Solid, not blinking) on the gauge cluster. Also a buzzing coming from the relay. As soon as I would plug a turn signal in, it'd stop and the light would go out. I tried this with all four of them, one at a time. I even went as far as to take my headlight bulb out and try that with one of the turn signal wires. Same thing, no blinking, no nothing.

Any other suggestions?
I will get pictures up tomorrow at some point. Or even make a quick video explaining and showing what is wrong.

Nice that you like the RC51 so much.

Buy yourself an LED indicator relay from Ebay (2 connector type that is a direct replacement for the original). I would suspect it's that, since a standard relay won't work properly with LED's due to incorrect load / resistance. Let us know how you get on so that if it is this, others will know from searching in future. HTH :)

And completly tidy up that bird's nest. Sadly it's a common problem with undertail conversions, but there are tidy ways to sort it out. If not, you may have more electrical problems in future...

Solder, shrink wrap and dielectric grease are your friends here....:cool:

I'm going to give that a try, it makes sense. But the current relay wouldn't even do anything with a normal bulb. (I.E. The headlight I used) Wouldn't hurt to try anyhow.

The birds nest. Yeah, I've already started tidying it up, it honestly looks a hell of a lot better now, I'll definitely be posting some before and after pics after I get my 10 posts.

A led vs normal relay won't make a difference in work vs not work. A normal relay just flashes faster. However, your relay may be kaput. It is worth swapping another relay to test. Someone here can probably comment more.

No worries.

Headlight bulb is of incorrect wattage for an indicator relay so I wouldn't expect it to work with a headlight bulb... As you say the relay is buzzing, it doesn't sound too healthy either.

Don't forget LED's are polarity sensitive, if they don't work one way round, take them out turn them through180* and put them back in.

I would also check the earth's, this will also cause the symptoms you are seeing.

We use LED as a term so much nowadays, some might not realise it stands for light emitting diode (A diode only allows electrical flow in one direction). A bad central earth connection could also indeed be a cause (Harder to find but check the areas near where the seat frame attaches to the main frame - IIRC there are some earth connections there). In any case, the original indicator relay isn't designed to work with LED's and will flash far too fast (If not faulty) so may as well get one and you'll have that part taken care of already. You'll get to the bottom of it.

It ended up being the relay. I tidied up the birds nest in the back. Works fine now. Thanks for all the help. Sadly I won't be riding her anymore, just had a death in the family, and now I'm having to sell her to see them.

A led vs normal relay won't make a difference in work vs not work. A normal relay just flashes faster. However, your relay may be kaput. It is worth swapping another relay to test. Someone here can probably comment more.
I disagree. Yes, for a short time, the relay will sort of work, fast like you said, but this wont last very long before the relay gives out and stops working, or buzzing like the OP said. I had exactly the same symptoms when I installed front Protons with the OEM rear bulbs. The updated LED compatible relay instantly fixed the problem. That was about 2 years ago...
