So I took the plunge and bought another sportbike. I bought a 2011 ZX10R. I am still waiting for delivery. I also have a Yamaha Road star 1700 and yes he 2003 RC51. I have to fix the gas line on my Road Star and its maintenance time for the RC. I have decided to do a complete rebuild / off frame restoration wiring and all on the RC. It was purchased as a salvage bike it was crashed pretty good. The engine and tranny have about 7k miles and it runs strong. The plastics are ok it was made road worthy again. However I want to bring this bike back to like new quality. I want to do all the work my self. Right now I have a 5k budget to rebuild it. I bought it for 2k. I will be picking everybody's brains for help as this will be my first bike restoration. I am trying to decide if I'm going to modd it or just full restoration. One of my local buddies says I should bring the engine and tranny to the local shop and have them rip it apart and rebuild it? Would his he a waste of money? Also any ideas where to get faring replacements?

The engines are bulletproof unless they were stunted heavily. Save your money if it runs fine now!

It's easier to mod them while rebuilding, rather than keep it stock, but your call.

Fairings are tough, that's what everyone wants. :) They get damaged really easily and are huge money new or in good shape used. There have been decent reviews of much of the import bodywork kits found online. Some small fitment issues here and there, but overall, mostly positive reviews. It is what it is! :)

I have a set of aftermarket skins. Repsol clone. They seem to fit pretty good, I will have to help them some. It will take alittle work to get them to fit right. I was pleased with the paint on the skins and also they were fairly thick. Not to flimsy. Around 800 shipped off e-bay.Go.od luck

If your plastics are in any kind of repairable shape, keep em for now. If I saw pictures of all the damage, I could tell you about how much it would cost to repair and repaint. I just did my RC51. And I bought it pretty rashed up! My partner Barry Brooke owns Cycle Works here in Sacramento. He helped me with the whole project and did the painting for me, and he's really good.

As far as mods, if you do all your reading first so you can decide which mods you want and can afford, then I say do them as your rebuilding. Your bike's gonna be all apart anyway. Leave a little slush money for those cool used things that will pop up for sale while your doing your rebuild. Things like billet exhaust hangers, or crg levers, or (my favorite score) a scotts damper. I also scored a PCIIIr that's waiting to be installed. I just wanted to ride the bike first for a couple rides!

btw, I rode a '02 roadstar warrior for almost 3 years. That's a helluva cruiser!

congrats on your purchase of the zx10r, id love one myself.

as for the rc, personally id leave the motor alone with only 7k on the clock. you will want to do all the free modifications, perhaps upgrade your airbox, or mod the stock one, get a good pair of slipons and a pcIII with a custom dyno tune on it.

if you want a nice slipon system you should check out:

http://www.blackdragonexhaust.net/

that is where i got my system, and the owner is a member of this site (and the other rc site). its a really nice system and it sounds incredible.

you can buy new oem bodywork from www.ronayers.com or you can hawk ebay to find a good clean set.
