I heard the last 3 numbers on the serial number are the production number of the bike, if its true mine would have been the 299th built.
Is that true?
Is there any way to find out more about the bike, like release number, location, and other info?

last 4 numbers and yes, I did a google search before about it and found lots of good information. It was a while ago so I don't remember exatcly where I found it but I don't wanna take the fun out of it for you either so google away.

Construction of vehichle identification number chart..

(First three digits)- Make and type- "JH2", JH3 -Manufactured in Japan,
(next five digits)-vehicle description "SC360" means VTR1000f
(Nineth digit) is (has no bearing(per honda)
(Tenth digit) model year- V=1997, W=1998, X=1999, Y=2000, 1=2001, 2=2002
(eleventh digit) "Letter" verifies the plant in which bike was manufactured
A-Ohio, USA
B-AAlst, Belguim
C-Saitama, Japan
D-Guadalajara, Mexico
E-Montesa, Spain
F-Atessa,Italy
K-Kumamosu, Japan
M-Hamamatsu,Japan
R-Manaus, Brazil
S-Suzuka,Japan
T-Tochigi,Japan
4-S.Carolina,USA
(Last six digits) is the sequence of production number..
example- JH2 SC360 XV C 000001
