Well, after all the discussion i've read and been in, I finished my header. The main purpose was to open up my options for aftermarket exhaust. It worked fine and was pretty easy.
I just cut off my 2-1-2 pipe from the front cylinder pipe. the back cylinder pipe has 2 slip joint/clamps. I just loosened them up all the way for flexibility. I couldn't find a cheap oem sp2 header, but Ben at rc51parts.com had a 'project' sp2 header for cheap, so I got it. All I needed was the sp2 x-pipe and it was in perfect shape. I admit to spending entirely to much time fitting things together before welding, but I don't do this all the time so I checked and rechecked. And re-checked. It all fit pretty good. Weld, smooth, put it all together, fire the bike up, and BAM, she snaps to life. Sounding sweet with the yosh's.

Time for a beer :D

nice job. the yoshimura's look great on there. Glad it worked out for you. So just to be clear for all the other guys who i'm going to refer to this thread.....An SP2 header will in fact fit on an SP1? Thanks for the thread Jondog.

So tell me how this worked you took the sp2 header and cut off the front pipe of th sp2 and weldded your sp1 front pipe on to the sp2 x-pipe and that sp2 back pipe bolts to the sp1 back cylinder is this right.

Thanks for the comments guys. That wasn't a very good post, it was late and I see the post isn't too clear. Sorry.
What I started with was my complete sp1 header, and most of a sp2 header. All that was missing from it was about 12 inches from the middle of the front cylinder pipe. The part next to the crankcase. Maybe it got crushed or something, I don't know. I found it on RC51parts.com and bought it in pieces.

All I used from the sp2 header, was the x-pipe. The front and back cylinder down pipes are my original sp1.

Picture 1 shows the sp2 x-pipe fitted up in place. And my sp1 front cyl. down pipe is hanging there in front. I grinded till i got a perfect match on the butt-joint. The sp1 x-pipe (2-1-2 in reality) is laying on the ground.

In Picture 2 the clamping points matched great where the x-pipe meets the sp1 back cyl. down pipe. Not a great picture, but it lines up just like it should.

Picture 3, my weld isn't all that pretty, so I concentrated on good fill. Ran the welder a little hot, and the wire speed kinda fast. made for lots fill while still getting good penetration. Then smoothed it down with grinder wheel and 180 grit. Then I took the picture.

Picture 4 shows it all mounted up and after I took it for a quick ride around the block to test.

The whole thing took about 4-5 hours. I musta been up and down on both sides of my bike a hundred times! Fitment was 95% satisfactory in the end. Not perfect, but real close. For once, one of my modifications was as easy as I thought it would be. I'm pretty happy with it, but now gotta install my pc and the right map.

Well, my conversion wouldn't confirm that. But I've read a hundred times now from people who would know, yes they fit. I have never tried. But I found the project sp2 header, it was only $80. And I liked the idea keeping my sp1 down pipes cause they're mated to the cylinder port better than a sp2 header would be.

Everything you said there is right except the very last. The sp2 x-pipe clamps the sp1 back pipe. The sp2 back pipe didn't fit as good. The sp1 back pipe is actually 2 pieces, so loosening them made fitment a little easier

Thanks gts455, I wanted to make a decent post about this, cause this merging of the two headers was just as straight forward and do-able as it looks.

I have lots more pictures and planned on doing a little write-up on this project. I'm thinking, when I get it done, I'll repost it one more time with a search friendly title to make it easy to locate. I dont know how many sp2 x-pipes are out there, probably not many that aren't already the whole header. You never know, Ben had one.
And thanks to Ben at rc51parts.com. He got me that x-pipe; good price, and a good, clean, no-dents part.

I have read that the SP1 header pipes are much better in gas flow than the SP2's.
If that's the case, doesn't the x-pipe make all the difference?

See, I remember reading just the opposite. I did a ton of research here and on zilla. There's a lot of conflicting information out there, so I can't be sure about that.
The main benefit: now I can run any SP2 slip-ons.

Totaly agree with you and you know it before you even post ;)
Just wanted to know for sure if there was something definitive on that....

So all we need to do is to I save the necessary amount of money and find it out on the dyno :D

So the question NOW is...are you willing to do this for ther members (parts avaiable) and at what cost? It ain't no fun if the homies can't have none.....

Great idea Jon glad it worked out for ya. As for my 2000 sp1 all just keep running my Ducatti Monster Scorpion slip-ons for now.

The SP1 crosspipe is laying on the floor.
I'm fitting in the SP2 X-pipe.


Fitting it up to the rear down pipe.


Tacked it together.


One side.


The other side. I ran the welding wire hot and fast. Exhaust pipes are always dirty, no matter how clean you try to get them. That's why you see some porosity.


The weld was solid once ground smooth.

Hey JD I just checked out the link, oddly enough I know the OP. He is a member on my local site, lives 20 min from my house and I just bought a pair of Knox Biomech gloves off of him this year.

We have met on a couple occasions at local bike nights and I just found out recently he is management at my step son's work, essentially one of his bosses...small world. Good guy too we spoke a great deal about his trip to the IOM this year and he's in his late 60's or early 70's and still rides his RC, says he will take it to his grave.

He's a cool dude...
