So I'm at a point where I think I want to start to do some cosmetic stuff. So I think an undertail maybe where I would like to start.

I honestly have never installed one (go figure after being in the bike industry for about 18 years). So how difficult is it? What does installation entail?

Is there cutting involved? Also can you guys recommend one? I've read a few posts about crap tail lights, will there be a need to upgrade the led's?

What I have is a cut down stock tray (just the fender, do you lose the stock tray?), but installing a high mount interferes with the turn signals, but what I don't want is after installing the under tail is seeing the seat cowl sticking up about 3 to 4 mm like all the pics I see...is there a way to fix that issue?

Also if someone has a good used one with lights already upgraded I may just take it off of your hands if you're considering selling. Pm me

I will send you an e-mail on this subject. I installed my own, wiring and fitting is a no brainer. I will also send you the link for the one I got from US with intergrated led signal into the two round tail lights. Check the gallery for my rear end pic's ( :eek::eek:that sounds wrong:rolleyes::D:p)

The reason for the seat cover sitting up high is that the tail section is forced to sit lower when you put and undertail on. The undertail material sits in between the stock fender and the tail section. Since the seat cover's position is dictated by the subframe, that isn't going anywhere. What I had to do on mine was to get the tail installed with the side and top bolts loose, and pull up on the rear tip of the tail and tighten the top bolts at the same time. This forces the tail to sit up higher and mate with the seat cover.

If you do go the undertail route, get a spare fender/battery tray and save your stock one. You can find chopped ones much easier than non-chopped ones if you ever want to go back to stock.

Most undertail instructions say to cut across the fender just aft of the battery box.
But this loses structural support.
Instead, cut a U shape on the fender to maintain structural support.
Search the forum to find my post with photos showing my method.

Mine had no OEM undertail/battery box when I picked it up...The P.O had done some really DUMB things to her, she was all hacked and very dirty when I picked her up but LOW miles;).

I scored an opp cf with led's and like sub said make a u-turn type cut.

Get all led's and the flasher unit for them.

The best route (I think) is to retain the oem connectors and tray just like mentioned before go to E-bay for donor parts and shelf your oem's.

I used metric threaded rivets and got rid of the stupid clips also the c/f tail is paper thin so the cowl sits titties ;)

If you don't have anything there, then an undertail is a decent option, but with a stock setup, I wouldn't change anything other than getting some different turn signals like protons or the rizoma's discussed recently here. The stock tail lights are something that separates the bike from the rest of the crowd, and undertails just look like an attempt to blend in. On top of that, none that I have seen have the same visibility in the brake light or turn signals as stock brake lights or aftermarket signals. Led's look good at night, but when done incorrectly and viewed during the day they are, at best shitty, and at worst dangerous. Hotbodies' led's are a prime example of this.

I've had a mototech, then a hotbodies ss, and a couple iterations of a custom setup, and none of them look as good as the stock tail light. I too started with an already hacked up bike, and should have just gone back to stock as soon as I bought it and not wasted time and money effing around.

This is what I started with:

I went with the Bestem USA undertail, I find the LED's to be bright enough on it even in the daytime with the sun right on them they are still bright.
I am happy with it anyways.

I've about all the posts here on undertails but there's one question I have that hasn't been answered...what's the end result of the trunk space?
